3.4/5

Best for: Budget buyers who want 150cc torque for highway and pillion use

The GS 150 is the classic budget 150: a long-running, simple Suzuki with a 12-litre tank and self-start, now the cheapest 150cc bike from a major brand.

Our verdict

At Rs 399,900 the GS 150 is about Rs 60,000 cheaper than Honda's CG 150 and gives you a 150cc engine, 5 gears, self-start and a 12-litre tank. It is an old design with drum brakes at both ends and no published power figure. Buy it if you want 150cc pulling power for the least money; pay more for the CG 150 if you want a front disc and a newer engine.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Cheapest 150 from a major brand
  • Strong pulling power for two-up and highway riding
  • Self-start and 5-speed gearbox
  • 12-litre tank and wide comfortable seat
  • Well known to mechanics; established used market

What we don’t

  • Drum brakes front and rear
  • Old design; Suzuki publishes no power figures
  • Spoke wheels and basic instruments
  • Fewer dealers than Honda

Engine and performance

Pak Suzuki's brochure lists a 150cc, 4-stroke, air-cooled OHC engine with 57.0 x 56.8 mm bore and stroke, 9.2:1 compression, CDI ignition, electric and kick start and a 5-speed gearbox. Suzuki does not publish power or torque; PakWheels lists 13.8 hp and 13.4 Nm, which we could not confirm.

In practice the GS 150 is known for torque: it pulls a pillion and luggage comfortably and cruises easily on highways, which is why it is popular outside the big cities.

Comfort and handling

Suzuki lists a 1,270 mm wheelbase, 155 mm ground clearance and 116 kg dry mass, with oil-damped telescopic forks and swing-arm rear shocks. The brochure highlights a wide seat with a grip bar for the pillion.

The weak point is braking: drums at both ends on a 150 that weighs 116 kg. Ride with extra distance, especially two-up.

Fuel economy and running costs

No official figure. PakWheels lists about 45 km/l, which would be about 22 litres per 1,000 km. The 12-litre tank gives a long range. Service parts are well known to mechanics, though Suzuki's dealer network is smaller than Honda's.

Features

Self-start, 5 gears, 35 W headlight bulb, spoke wheels, drum brakes and a 12V 8Ah battery. Colours are Red and Black. There is no disc brake, alloy wheel or digital display.

Running costs in rupees

At the 45 km/l PakWheels lists, 1,000 km uses about 22 litres, roughly Rs 8,700 at Rs 391.30 per litre. The 12-litre tank means about 500 km between fills on that figure.

The drive chain is a RK428FDZ with 116 links, per Suzuki's brochure, and the battery is a 12V 8Ah unit. Both are common parts. Suzuki's dealer network is smaller than Honda's, so in small towns you may rely on independent mechanics who know the GS well.

Resale and who should buy it

The GS 150 has a long-established used market and holds value reasonably well for a non-Honda. Buy it if you need 150cc pulling power on a budget, ride long distances or carry heavy loads. If braking and newer technology matter, the CG 150 is the better bike for about Rs 60,000 more.
