Our verdict

The self-start and 5-speed gearbox fix the two biggest everyday complaints about the CG 125, and the fifth gear makes highway cruising calmer. You still get drum brakes and the same old engine, and Rs 286,900 is a big jump over Rs 238,500. Worth it if you start the bike many times a day or ride long distances; otherwise the kick model is better value.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Self-start plus kick back-up
  • 5-speed gearbox for calmer highway cruising
  • Same tough engine and parts network as the CG 125
  • Strong Honda resale

What we don’t

  • Rs 48,400 more than the kick-start CG 125
  • Still drum brakes front and rear
  • 8 kg heavier than the kick model (108 kg)
  • Battery adds a running cost (a 12V 7Ah battery was Rs 4,400 at a Honda parts seller)

What you get over the CG 125

Atlas Honda's specs show two real changes: self-start with a kick back-up, and a 5-speed gearbox in place of 4. The engine is the same 124cc OHV unit (listed as 124.1 cm3, 9.0:1 compression), and the bike weighs 108 kg against 100 kg for the kick model.

There is also a CG 125S Gold at Rs 296,900, which is the same machine with gold-themed styling.

Engine and performance

Atlas Honda publishes no power or torque. Acceleration is similar to the kick model; the fifth gear lowers revs at cruising speed, which reduces vibration and strain on long runs. For city-only riders the difference is small.

Comfort and handling

Dimensions are almost identical to the CG 125 (765 mm seat, 1,212 mm wheelbase), with slightly more rear suspension travel (70 mm vs 68 mm). Brakes remain drums at both ends, which is the main weakness at this price, since the CB 125F has a front disc.

Fuel economy and running costs

No official figure. With the same engine, expect CG 125 economy (PakWheels lists 45 km/l; Pakistan Observer cited 35-37 km/l). The fifth gear can help a little on highways. Add the cost of a battery every few years.

Running costs in rupees

With no official fuel figure, use a range. At PakWheels' 45 km/l, 1,000 km needs about 22 litres, roughly Rs 8,700 at Rs 391.30 per litre. At the 37 km/l Pakistan Observer cited, it is 27 litres, about Rs 10,600.

Servicing costs match the kick-start CG 125: 20W-40 JASO MA oil (Rs 1,220 a litre for Atlas Honda's own oil when we checked), a genuine chain sprocket kit at Rs 3,550 and cheap brake shoes. The extra items are the battery and the starter system, which are reliable but add an occasional cost.

Resale and who should buy it

Resale is strong, though the kick-start CG 125 is the bigger used market. Buy the 125S if you are older, ride in heavy stop-go traffic or cover long distances where the fifth gear helps. If you are paying close to Rs 290,000 anyway, also compare the CB 125F, which adds a front disc, alloy wheels and a 12.3-litre tank for Rs 110,000 more.
