How to choose, and what to check
Disc, shackle or chain
A shackle or disc lock goes through the brake disc or the wheel and stops the bike rolling. A chain lets you tie the bike to something fixed, which is the only kind of lock a thief with a pickup cannot defeat. Hardened steel matters more than size.
How you use it matters as much as what you buy
Lock the rear wheel if you park on the street, lock the front if you park nose-in. Keep the lock off the ground so it cannot be hammered against the kerb. And use it every time, including the five minute stop, because that is the stop it will happen on.
